The Cappuccino, An Oldie but a Goodie

A Brief History of the Cappuccino

"The cappuccino, one of the world’s most beloved coffee drinks, traces its origins back to 17th-century Europe. The name comes from the Capuchin friars, a Catholic monastic order known for their brown robes with a distinctive hood (cappuccio in Italian). The drink was named after them because its rich brown color, created by mixing espresso with frothy milk, resembled their robes."

Early versions of the cappuccino were made with brewed coffee and cream. The invention of the espresso machine led the way for the 'modern style' espresso-based cappuccino emerging in Italy in the early 1900s.

A Simple Way to Make a Classic Cappuccino

Step-by-Step Method:

Brew the Espresso

  • Use an espresso machine to extract a 1 or 2 shots of rich, bold espresso.
  • You can also use a stovetop (Moka pot) for a strong coffee substitute.
  • Also acceptable are; 2 pods, or a tablespoon of instant coffee.

Steam the Milk

  • If you like the whipped-cream taste, add some cream to the milk
  • Position the wand just below the surface to create microfoam
  • You can generously stretch the coffee, foam is an essential part
  • Heat until the milk reaches about 65°C—or to your liking.
  • Froth the milk until you get a thick, velvety foam.

Pour and Serve

  • Pour the frothed milk into the espresso
  • Dust with cocoa powder enough to create a crusty top
  • Top with cinnamon for a traditional touch
  • We use a dark chocolate powder for a bitter-sweet compliment
